She unearthed a box of old papers, and her fingers, stiff with a cold fury, plucked out a folded sheet of stationery. It was a draft, her mother's elegant script looping across the page. A resignation letter, dated from a time before Sarah's birth.

The words, polite yet firm, described her mother's exit from a prestigious law firm. It spoke of a need for "greater fulfillment." Sarah slammed the letter back in the box, the paper's crispness seeming to mock her. Fulfillment?
