The crash was a sound like the world ending. He was in his workshop, carefully sanding a piece of wood, when the ground shook, and then came the deafening silence. It was the enormous redwood that towered over the Miller's property. He’d always felt its presence, a looming threat.

He stepped outside, squinting against the bright sunlight. The redwood lay sprawled across the property line, blocking his driveway. He stood there, a strange quiet descending over him. He felt the muscles in his jaw tighten. He rubbed his temples. He was going to have to deal with this, he knew. He could already feel the exhaustion creeping in.
