He saw the sign first: "Park Maintenance - Tree Removal." Beneath it, a date, a time. He felt a pressure building behind his eyes, a familiar tension in his jaw. The information felt like an insult. They didn't even care enough to tell him.

He circled the area, as if expecting the tree to magically reappear. The sun felt overly bright, the breeze too sharp. He kicked at a piece of wood, sending it flying. The tree had been his, a part of his history. Now, it was just another item on a to-do list.
