"Updated and Ready to Move In!" The words on the screen, plastered over a picture of her childhood bedroom, struck a discordant note within Sarah. The house, always a source of complex emotions, triggered a sharp, unwelcome prickle. She felt a surge of something nasty.

She found herself analyzing the changes, a detailed assessment of paint colors and landscaping. They had painted the front door a cheerful blue, the same color as the sky on the day she ran away. A tear rolled down her cheek.

She walked away from the screen, unable to look at it any longer. She went to the window, watching the rain beat against the glass. Her hands were shaking. She picked up a teacup and shattered it against the hard floor. The sound, sharp and final, didn't bring any relief.
