The new house felt wrong. It was spacious, modern, and filled with sunlight, a stark contrast to the cozy, familiar apartment he’d grown up in with his mother. Daniel hated it. He refused to unpack, leaving his boxes piled in the corner of his new bedroom, a physical manifestation of his discontent.

His stepmother, a woman with a constant, saccharine smile, kept asking him if he was settling in, if he needed anything. Each query felt like a veiled attempt to erode the space he had carved out for himself, to force him to accept this new reality. The idea of her taking care of him, doing things for him… the mere thought brought bile to his throat.

He retreated to his room, slamming the door. The sound echoed through the sterile silence of the house. He needed to escape, to regain some control over his life.
