The air in the bedroom was thick with unspoken words. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was making. He’d been in a foul mood for days, ever since he found the evidence of her secret stash. Maria always berated him for frivolous spending. She had insisted that every single penny be accounted for.

He stared at the closet, a place where she had always seemed to live in the fear of spending.
