Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the sharp stabs of unease in Amelia’s chest. She watched, jaw clenched, as the sleek black car – a model she could only dream of affording – purred down the driveway next door. Mr. Henderson, with his perfectly tailored coat and effortless air, strolled towards the vehicle. He always seemed to glide through life, free from the daily grind that consumed her.

Amelia’s calloused hands tightened on the worn ceramic mug, the warmth doing little to soothe the cold knot in her stomach. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a comfort, now felt like a taunt. She’d spent the morning wrestling with overdue bills, while he probably spent his morning choosing between a vineyard in Tuscany and a private island.

Her gaze flicked to the peeling paint on her own house, a stark contrast to the manicured perfection next door. It wasn't fair. He acted like a regular guy, always friendly enough with a nod and a polite "Morning," but the cars, the holidays, the ease with which he lived... it grated on her. She wished, with a sudden, vicious intensity, that the rain would somehow seep through his perfect roof.
