The old oak tree in the center of campus, once a source of solace, now stood like a judgmental sentinel. Maya kicked at a fallen leaf, sending it skittering across the cracked pavement. She had planned to spend her life here, at her favorite university.

The campus, once the source of so many memories, had become a prison of the past. Each building, each pathway, now served as a reminder of what she had lost.

She pulled out a crumpled cigarette from her pocket, something she hadn't touched in months. She lit it with shaky hands, taking a long drag. The smoke burned her throat, but it was a welcome distraction.
