It was the realtor who showed up. He knew what was coming. The pine tree, a beautiful specimen that offered shade and privacy on his side of the property line. It cast long shadows across their carefully manicured lawn. He knew they wanted it gone.

She started with a polite preamble. “Just seeing if you’d consider it.” Her voice was soft, persuasive. He hated it. Her words made him feel sick. This wasn't a request; it was a demand.

He looked at the tree, his chest tightening. He didn’t want to look at her, her carefully chosen outfit, her perfect smile. He thought of all the times he had sat under the tree. He closed the door before she could finish her sentence, and went back inside, his hands trembling.
