Gemotions

The lilies arrived at precisely the wrong time. Just as she was finally, maybe, starting to feel okay. The scent, cloying and sweet, already turned her stomach. She slammed the vase down on the kitchen counter, the glass rattling. No card. Of course. Another anonymous offering, another silent demand for… what? Forgiveness? Understanding? Neither was forthcoming. She considered tossing them in the bin, but a stubborn streak, the one that always kept her going, made her fill them with water. Let them die slowly, she thought. Like everything else.
