She was at a dinner party, making small talk. A stranger, a complete stranger, mentioned they'd read her essay. They loved it, thought it was “so moving.” She forced a smile, the muscles in her face tightening.

She remembered the fear she felt, submitting it. The vulnerability. She was left feeling exposed. Now, she was just a story to them, a narrative they could consume and then discard. She excused herself, feeling the need for fresh air.

She went outside, taking deep breaths. She looked up at the stars, feeling small and insignificant. A deep, cold wave of weariness passed over her, making her feel as though she was being used again.
