“Well, this is a surprise,” her grandmother said, her voice thin but unwavering. Sarah, her granddaughter, looked at her, offering a weak smile. The old woman's knuckles, gnarled with age, gripped the armrests of her chair. Sarah felt a strange detachment, as if watching a play she already knew the ending of.
