Gemotions

The incessant hammering had been going on for hours. David, sprawled on the couch with a book he hadn't opened, felt the vibrations travel through the floor and up into his bones. His shoulders slumped, he rubbed his eyes, feeling leaden.

He’d tried calling the building inspector last week, after the first week of noise. Nothing had changed. He thought about the legal proceedings, the battles, the paperwork. The mere thought made him feel exhausted.

He closed his eyes. He could picture the mess, the dust, the inevitable delays. He knew how this would go. Just another slow, grinding erosion of his peace and quiet. He took a long, slow breath. The sound of the hammer hitting wood echoed through the walls. He’d just have to wait it out.
