“Not surprised,” Ethan muttered to himself, the words barely audible. He’d known, deep down, that his chances were slim. The odds were always stacked against him.

He tossed the rejection email into the overflowing trash bin. It landed on top of a pile of old bills and fast-food wrappers. He went over to the window.

The bustling city below seemed indifferent to his disappointment. He watched the cars flow in the street, the people moving to their own rhythm. He turned away from the window, and reached for the remote.
