The email arrived, a digital echo of the physical notice. Subject: Proposed Fence Installation. His cursor hovered over the delete button for a moment, then he sighed and clicked it open. The usual bureaucratic language.

He read it through, his gaze unfocused. He had argued about this sort of thing before. Fought battles. Lost them. What was the point?

He leaned back in his chair, the cheap plastic creaking under his weight. He could feel the familiar fatigue settling into his bones. He approved the plan and hit ‘send’, the words feeling hollow. The world would go on as it always did.
