The U-Haul rattled, its contents a testament to failed ambitions and shattered dreams. Amelia watched from the porch, a thin film of sweat clinging to her forehead despite the late afternoon chill. Her parents, bless their hearts, were already inside, probably arguing over where to put the enormous, floral-print armchair she'd always hated. She pulled the door closed, a finality she didn't feel.

The air inside smelled of pot roast and mothballs. Her childhood bedroom, now a repository for old magazines and dusty trophies, was exactly as she remembered it: suffocating. She dropped her bag on the floor, the sound a dull thud.

"Dinner's almost ready, dear," her mother called from the kitchen, her voice bright, unnaturally so. Amelia sighed, a slow, deliberate exhale that seemed to drain the energy from her very bones. This was it, wasn't it? The beginning of the end.
