The coffee cup, half-empty, sat beside the accusatory document. Her fingers traced the rim, again and again. She should be reviewing the evidence, preparing a defense, formulating a response. But her mind was elsewhere, adrift. The words on the page blurred.

She felt a strange detachment, as if watching the situation unfold from a distant shore. The tremor in her hand was barely perceptible. It was always like this. The pressure, the expectations, the inevitable collapse. Why try?

She took a long, slow sip of the cold coffee. The bitterness did nothing to rouse her. The world felt muffled, distant, and uninteresting.
