The small, cramped apartment felt smaller than usual. Kevin sat at his desk, staring at the unopened envelope on his desk. He'd seen the email notification. It was there, unread.

He knew what was inside. He knew the outcome. He didn't have the energy to open it. He found himself envying the way Ben seemed to naturally sail through life.

He leaned back in his chair, the squeak echoing in the silence. He thought about calling Sarah. Maybe she’d want to go for a drink. He picked up his phone, then put it back down again. What would they even talk about?
