Gemotions

The champagne flute felt heavy in Elias’s hand, the bubbles doing little to lighten the mood settling over him. He watched the happy couple twirl on the dance floor, a kaleidoscope of joy he was meant to share, yet felt worlds away from. He knew, he just knew, she'd be here. And there she was, across the room, laughing with a group of friends. He let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. He wouldn’t make eye contact. He didn’t want to spoil the day.

The band struck up a slow song, and a wave of couples moved to the center of the room. He felt the familiar pull, the urge to leave, but he’d promised Chloe he’d be here for her. He took another sip of champagne, the tartness doing little to combat the hollowness in his chest.

He felt a tap on his shoulder. It was Sarah. “Elias, fancy seeing you here," she said, her voice bright. He gave a weak smile. He mumbled a hello and watched his eyes fall to his shoes. He forced a smile. He had to fake it till he made it.
