“Well, this is it,” Liam muttered to himself, the words barely audible above the music. He was already feeling a dull sense of dread when he accepted the invitation, but now, watching the happy couple dance their first dance, that feeling had intensified. He knew where she’d be. He knew what she’d be doing.

He surveyed the scene, taking in the decorations, the people, anything to distract from the inevitable. He ran his hand over his chin. He felt a profound sense of tiredness.

He saw her near the bar, laughing at something a friend had said. He felt nothing. He wasn’t going to approach her. He excused himself and went to the bathroom, just to be alone.
