Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windowpane, blurring the city lights into streaks of orange and yellow. He was at it again, pacing the living room, the phone pressed tight to his ear. I didn't even bother to look up from my book this time. What was the point?

My shoulders slumped as the wind howled outside. The pages turned slowly, the words losing their meaning. My fingers tapped a rhythmic beat against the book's cover, a nervous habit I hadn't realized I had.

He hung up, and the silence descended once more, heavy and suffocating. “Something to eat?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. He shook his head, and I knew the evening would continue, as it always did.
