Gemotions

The scent of roasting chestnuts filled the crisp autumn air. "Remember that Christmas Eve?" Peter asked, a wide smile spreading across his face. David was across from him, sipping his hot chocolate.

Peter was animated, describing the festive decorations, the crackling fire, the feeling of warmth and togetherness. David's face was impassive.

He remembered a different scene. He recalled the forced cheer, the arguments that simmered beneath the surface, the emptiness that settled deep in his bones. He looked at the steam rising from the mug, a wisp of vapor that soon faded away.
