He saw the email, a publisher’s proposition, and a sense of inevitability washed over him. He’d half-expected this. He'd lived with the weight of that diary for years, a constant reminder of youthful folly and heartbreak.

He’d always known the chance existed that it would be made public. He'd never tried to destroy it, or even to hide it. What was the point? He opened the email.

He read the contract, the terms. He didn't negotiate, didn’t argue. He clicked "Accept." He felt nothing.

He went for a walk outside, the air fresh and cool against his skin. He observed the street, the people, the cars. He saw a dog, and he thought about what he would have done in the past, and how things have changed.
