"You didn't make it, huh?" The words, a casual observation from a teammate, landed like a blow. Michael looked down at his shoes, meticulously scuffing the toe against the concrete. The familiar scent of the gym – sweat, rubber, and chlorine – usually energized him. Now, it just made him feel tired.

He mumbled a response, something about ‘bad luck’ and ‘better luck next time’. The other guy clapped him on the shoulder, a gesture that felt both patronizing and genuine. He watched the team begin their drills, their laughter echoing through the empty space. His stomach rumbled; he hadn’t eaten since this morning, but suddenly had no appetite. He just wanted to go home.
