The empty gym echoed with the lingering scent of sweat and anticipation. David sat on the floor, back against the wall, knees pulled up to his chest. He hadn’t bothered to change out of his practice clothes. The jersey felt scratchy against his skin. He fiddled with the laces on his shoes, pulling them tighter, then looser, then tighter again, the repetitive action a mindless distraction.

He watched the sun set through the large windows, painting the court in hues of orange and purple. The silence was deafening, broken only by the occasional distant car horn. He had dreamed of this for so long, the team, the games, the victory. And now? Just emptiness. He wanted to go to bed but knew he wouldn't sleep.
