The email sat unopened in his inbox for days. Finally, he clicked on it, the words shimmering slightly in the dim light of his monitor. The subject line, "Departmental Reassignment," seemed to pulse with a slow, relentless rhythm.

He walked to the new office building in a daze, the city sounds fading into the background.
