The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. A friend request from Ben Carter. The name alone brought a wave of unpleasant recollections, like a bitter aftertaste.

She remembered the times she spent alone, excluded and laughed at. She could easily deny the request, or even block him, but the thought filled her with a profound weariness.

She pushed herself up from the sofa, the creak of the springs echoing in the otherwise quiet room. She sighed, her shoulders slumping. She swiped to accept. It was only a small thing, and she had no fight left.
