The review sat on the laminated counter, a stark white rectangle amidst the organized chaos of the kitchen. Chef Antoine stared at it, the words blurring despite his thick glasses. He’d poured his soul into the new tasting menu, the culmination of months of research and experimentation. Now, it felt like a wasted effort. His shoulders slumped, the weight of the critique pressing down on him.

He ran a weary hand through his thinning hair. The clatter of pots and pans, the shouts of the line cooks, seemed distant, muted. He’d face the dinner rush, of course. He always did. But the fire, the spark that had driven him for years, had dwindled to a flicker.
