Rain hammered against the attic window. Clara sighed, the sound swallowed by the drumming. Another leak. Another problem. This house was a bottomless pit of repairs, and she, she was the one tasked with shoveling. Her shoulders slumped.

She’d been meaning to explore the attic since she’d moved in, but she kept… forgetting. Or, not forgetting, exactly. More like, the thought flickered, then extinguished itself in the face of the daily grind. Now, she was there and could barely keep her eyes open.

Pushing aside a stack of moth-eaten blankets, she found a latch. It opened with a groan. Inside, a narrow set of stairs wound downward. More tasks. Always more.
