The cheap motel room felt stifling, the air thick with the scent of stale cigarettes and unspoken grievances. Mark, sprawled on the bed, watched the flickering images on the television screen, a muted distraction. Across from him, a girl named Jessica was picking at a loose piece of wallpaper. "He gave you the watch too?" she asked, her voice flat.

Mark closed his eyes. The watch. The same engraved message. He'd known from the moment he'd seen her, the same hesitant smile, the same slightly too-eager eagerness. It was a familiar pattern, a recurring nightmare he’d learned to navigate with a certain practiced indifference. He wasn’t surprised, just... weary.
