The steam from the chipped mug of instant coffee fogged the diner window, obscuring the view of the bustling street. Esther traced a circle on the condensation with a fingernail, the action as familiar as breathing. The radio droned on, a perky announcer gushing about the "Sunshine Delight" pie, a dessert sensation sweeping the nation. She knew, with a certainty that settled in her bones like cold lead, that it was her "Lemon Kiss" pie, the one she’d perfected over years, now bearing someone else's name, someone else's success. She took a slow sip, the bitterness mirroring the ache in her chest.

A tremor ran through her, a wave of weariness she couldn't quite shake. The waitress, a teenager with too much eyeliner, placed a plate of scrambled eggs in front of her.
