The sunlight felt too bright, harsh, as Ethan walked across the shared room. He could see his journal, carelessly left open on the desk, the page with his most vulnerable words exposed to view. He felt nothing except a strange emptiness.

He looked over at Chris, his roommate, who was meticulously cleaning his desk. It was an elaborate display of innocence, but Ethan already knew. It didn’t matter. He’d figured as much.

He began packing his bag, slowly, methodically. There was no point in confronting him.
