He was already exhausted before he'd even started the day. The routine was set: wake up, drink coffee, check the mail, feel the familiar weight of disappointment. The package arrived on the same day as the letter he had been dreading. The rent had gone up again. He knew what he was going to do.

He walked to the door, picking up the package. It was light, almost insubstantial. He knew it was for the previous resident of the apartment, a woman named Emily Carter. He placed it carefully on the kitchen counter, next to the unwashed dishes. He didn't bother to open it. It was probably just bills or more junk. He would deal with it later. Or, he thought, maybe not.
