Gemotions

The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room. He sat on the sofa, watching the dust motes dance in the light. The doorbell rang, a shrill interruption to the quiet. He didn't move. He knew what it was. The bell rang again, insistent. He finally dragged himself to the door.

The package was addressed to someone he didn't know, someone who was long gone. He brought it inside and placed it on the coffee table. He felt nothing, not even the usual annoyance. There was nothing left to feel, anyway. He didn't want to open it. He just wanted the silence back.
