The crumpled patent application lay on the kitchen table, stained with coffee rings. Amelia picked at a loose thread on her jeans, her gaze distant. The automatic gardening system she’d designed, a project born from a passion for sustainable living, was now just a collection of discarded ideas. She knew, intellectually, that this sort of thing happened all the time. But the knowledge provided little comfort.
