The drive home felt longer than usual. The radio played a cheerful pop song, but the music seemed to mock him. He pulled into his driveway, the headlights cutting through the darkness.

He turned off the engine, but didn’t move. The car became a cocoon. He hadn't trained hard enough. He had known he wasn't good enough, but he'd been too afraid to face that truth.

He looked out at the familiar silhouette of his house, the warm lights beckoning him in. He would have to tell his parents, face them. The thought made him feel sick.
