He stared at the spreadsheet on his computer, the numbers mocking him. He’d meticulously budgeted, planned, built his future around this scholarship. Now, it was all a lie. He leaned back in his chair, the squeak of the plastic a grating sound. He felt… empty. It was like a balloon pricked with a pin, the air slowly, silently escaping. He closed the document, the screen going black, reflecting his own still, blank face. He knew he should be angry, but mostly he just felt tired, bone-deep weary.
