The adoption website stared back at her, a grid of hopeful eyes and wagging tails. Sarah knew what was coming. David had been talking about getting a dog for weeks, and now this. A dull ache throbbed behind her temples. The apartment, already cramped, would be even more so.

She ran a hand through her hair, smoothing down the stray strands. She had a mountain of work to do for her job, and there was no way she could provide care for a puppy. Yet, David's enthusiasm was infectious, and her own objections seemed to diminish with each passing day. The little dog's face on the screen were staring her down.

"Just… look," David had said, his voice brimming with excitement earlier. She'd given a quick glance, then turned away. Now, staring at the pictures, a wave of weariness washed over her. She knew the outcome. She clicked on the "small breeds" filter.
