The vet’s appointment was the next day. Alex was staring out the window, at the setting sun. Behind him, the small, fluffy bundle was causing chaos, running around his new home, a small, bright red cage.

He had resisted. He had argued. But the tiny thing had stolen the heart of his roommate, and that was that. He knew his protests were in vain. He had been overruled.

He ran a hand through his hair, his movements slow and deliberate. He closed his eyes for a moment, absorbing the sound of the hamster happily running. He knew what was coming. He went over to prepare his dinner.
