The old, yellowed letters were neatly stacked in a box in the attic. Each one, a fragment of a shared past with Emily. The silly jokes, the dreams, the secrets whispered under the summer stars. Now, she sat in a sterile waiting room. She found her in a hospital, her best friend's hair thin and her cheeks sunken.

She’d introduced herself, hoping for a spark of recognition. Emily’s eyes, clouded by illness, showed only a brief flicker of confusion. The nurse called out her name. The room was cold.
