The news felt like a final, definitive push. It wasn't unexpected, just another blow, just one more hurdle to clear. David stared at the ceiling, the stark white a painful contrast to his racing thoughts. He was meant to feel something, anger, maybe, or frustration, or even fear. But there was only a vast emptiness.

He rubbed his eyes. The coffee hadn’t helped. He’d barely slept last night, tossing and turning, the weight of the day pressing down on him. He considered calling in sick. What would be the point of sitting at his desk, pretending to care?

He went through the motions of his routine. His desk looked cluttered. He needed to clear it out, he knew. But even that task felt insurmountable. Everything felt like too much work. He remained, still, a statue carved into his seat.
