He slumped onto the park bench, the cold seeping into his bones. His fingers, numb with the chill, fumbled with his phone. He had intended to text his son, checking in on his day. Instead, his thumb had slipped, sending a casual "Hey" to the number he'd blocked years ago. The number of the woman who left him. He didn't even flinch.

A reply came instantly. "Who is this?" He stared at the message, the letters blurring in his vision. He just closed his eyes. He wouldn’t answer it. The world would keep moving. He'd just have to be here.
