The hum of the elevator continued, a monotonous drone that was beginning to feel like a living thing. David watched the emergency numbers, the numbers that promised rescue. He knew they wouldn't, or if they would, he had nothing to do with it.

His coworker, Maria, had begun to tell him her life story. He listened, said the right things. He was accustomed to the sound of it, the endless cycles of people. It was a blur.

The light was fading. He stared at his own hands, the hands that typed emails, the hands that felt this way. He let out a long breath. The world could wait. He could wait.
