Rain hammered against the window of David's cubicle, mirroring the incessant tapping of his fingers on the keyboard. He stared blankly at the code, the lines of text blurring into a meaningless jumble. He’d lost count of the projects he'd started and abandoned, the deadlines he’d missed. This job, like all the others, was just a holding pattern.

The new marketing intern, Sarah, bounded over, practically vibrating with energy. "David! Did you hear? They're having a company picnic! It's going to be so much fun!" Her enthusiasm was a stark contrast to his own apathy.
