The aroma of freshly brewed coffee did nothing to lift Samuel's spirits. He had discovered the letter in a dusty file cabinet, a document written by his father during a particularly difficult time in his life. The formal words spoke of leaving a career Samuel had always thought his father thrived in.

He took a sip of his coffee, the bitterness doing little to cut through the fog in his mind. He’d always felt a vague dissatisfaction with his own life, a sense of being trapped. The letter offered an explanation to his father’s long silence.

He stared out the window at the morning rush, people hurrying to their destinations. He felt a deep sense of inertia, a lack of will to join them. He felt it in his bones. He felt it in his chest. He felt it everywhere. He sank back into the chair.
