The letter arrived on a Tuesday, nestled amongst the usual junk mail. He hadn't bothered to open the mailbox in weeks, the mounting pile of envelopes a testament to his disinterest. He found it that evening, the sunlight streaming in the window highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air. He opened it slowly, a motion devoid of any real curiosity. Inside, the words swam before his eyes. He sat down heavily in his armchair, the springs protesting under his weight. He felt a profound sense of… well, nothing much, really. He folded the letter carefully, placed it back in the envelope, and then, without a second thought, tossed it in the trash.
