The realtor’s words, a cheery little chime of "historic charm" and "unique character," felt like a persistent mosquito buzzing near her ear. She let them wash over her while she gazed at the peeling wallpaper. Another house, another problem. It was the same everywhere. The inspector's report arrived, tucked amongst the junk mail: a casual mention of a "previous incident" in the attic. She tossed it onto the growing pile on the kitchen table, a collection of unanswered emails and overdue bills. The world was just one long stream of things she needed to deal with.

She poured another cup of coffee. The steam, usually a comfort, felt heavy in the stale air. A quick search online confirmed it: a forgotten case, decades ago, tucked away in the dusty archives. She’d known, somehow, it would be something.

The attic, a suffocating space filled with cobwebs and forgotten memories of the previous owner, remained untouched. She was in no hurry to explore. The world could wait.
