The email, subject line: "Important Information Regarding Your Property," sat in her inbox like a lead weight. She should have known. Nothing ever went smoothly. It was always a struggle. She opened it, the words blurring on the screen: "Unsolved homicide."

She leaned back in her chair, the springs groaning in protest. The view from her window, usually a calming balm, seemed to mock her with its perfect blue sky. She closed her eyes. It was a chore to breathe, to think.

She thought about the garden she wanted to cultivate, the dreams she had for the home. Those hopes felt far off. She took a deep breath. She’d deal with it later. There wasn't much else to do.
