He stared at the spreadsheet, the numbers swam before his eyes. He’d meticulously tracked every expense, every data point. His rival. They'd both been charged with the same problem, the same goal. He’d lost.

He heard the click of her heels on the linoleum floor. She stood at the doorway. She was his competition, and her project, remarkably similar to his, was a success. He knew the news. He already knew.

"It seems you have the edge," he stated, his voice devoid of emotion. He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the strands. He leaned back in his chair, the leather squeaking in protest. There was nothing more to be said. He watched the light fade.
