He didn't need the papers to know. He'd just known for a while, a slow, sickening realization that had been building inside him. The savings account, the meticulously crafted lies… it was all so predictable.

Ben sat on the edge of the bed, his shoulders slumped. The light from the setting sun cast long shadows across the room. He felt… spent. He knew he should be angry, but mostly he was tired.

He would call his mother later, he thought. She would understand. Right now, he just wanted to sleep.
